How Floral Design Creates Memorable Christmas Events in Central London

October 2026

When guests look back on a Christmas event, it's rarely a single detail they remember, but how the experience made them feel: the warmth of the welcome, the glow of candlelight across the table and the thoughtful touches that show the event was designed with them in mind. Christmas event styling in London has moved well beyond filling a room with baubles and fairy lights. Today, it's about shaping an atmosphere guests feel from the moment they arrive.

Floral design plays a powerful role in creating the memories guests hold onto. Seasonal foliage, scent, texture and light work together to set the tone, guide guests through the evening and give a venue its festive personality. This year, we're delighted to be partnering with Rust Bloom to bring our Grade I listed Georgian townhouses to life for the festive season. Below, Georgina Holmes, founder of Rust Bloom, shares Christmas event inspiration and insights on creating Christmas styling that feels elegant, sustainable and truly in keeping with its surroundings.

The First Impression Starts Before Guests Sit Down

The arrival moment sets the mood for everything that follows. As guests step inside {10-11} Carlton House Terrace, the entrance offers their first glimpse of what the evening holds, and a considered installation here builds a sense of anticipation before a single glass has been poured.

"I think the entrance is incredibly important because it sets the mood immediately," explains Georgina. "Guests love having their photograph taken in front of a beautiful tree or statement installation, and it will inevitably become the backdrop to many an Instagram post, so you have to give them something worth sharing! Seeing guests' faces light up as they enter is the response you want and tells you that you've got it right."

For planners looking for corporate Christmas party ideas in London that make an impact from the outset, the entrance and reception spaces are well worth prioritising. A statement tree, a generous garland or a striking floral installation gives guests an instant sense of occasion.

Designing Around the Venue Rather Than Decorating It

The most successful festive venue styling complements a building's character rather than competing with it. In a historic setting like {10-11}, preserved period architecture does much of the work, so the role of floral design is to enhance the existing venue ambience.

"I usually begin with the client's brief, whether that's a fully formed idea or simply an image that captures the feeling they want to create," says Georgina. "From there, I consider the style and history of the venue."

At {10-11}, designed by John Nash, grand symmetry and Regency detailing shape every design decision. "The architecture at Carlton House Terrace is especially important to work with," Georgina explains. "Its grand symmetry and Regency character naturally lend themselves to generous, balanced designs, with subtle nods to the building's Victorian and Edwardian influences."

This year's brief from our team was clear: no plastic, no glitter and a rich palette of mustard and burgundy. "This works beautifully with the period setting and led us towards natural decorations, fabric and warm lighting to create a magical atmosphere throughout the building," says Georgina.

Seasonality Creates Authentic Christmas Styling

Trends come and go, but seasonal materials have a timeless quality that always comes into their own at Christmas. Evergreen foliage, dried flowers, fruit and spice connect directly to centuries of festive tradition, which is why they sit so naturally within a heritage setting.

"Christmas is steeped in tradition and ritual, and I like to stay true to that symbolism while adding a few unexpected details along the way," Georgina says. "Keeping the colour palette considered and using seasonal, natural materials also help everything feel generous and festive without becoming overwhelming."

Sustainable floristry is central to Rust Bloom's approach. "Sustainability is incredibly important to me, and it's something I begin thinking about much earlier in the year. I already have a selection of British flowers and seed heads gathered earlier in the season drying in my studio, and I'll add hydrangeas and rosehips as we move into autumn."

"Dried allium seed heads, for example, can be finished in gold and make a beautiful natural alternative to plastic baubles. If they're carefully stored, they can also be reused the following year."

It's also the trend Georgina is most excited about this season. "I'm loving the use of dried flowers and sculptural seed heads, particularly alliums and enormous teasels. I love seeing how flowers that grew in abundance during spring and summer can be dried, restyled and enjoyed in a completely different season."

And one trend to leave behind? "I'm not ready to give up bows yet, as they've featured in my Christmas designs for many years. However, I'm slightly concerned that the world may have gone a little Christmas-bow crazy! I'm hoping we don't see too many more enormous bow arches over doorways this year. I'm a bit over those, I'm sad to say."

For organisations aligning year-end celebrations with their sustainability commitments, this approach offers luxury without compromise.

Creating Different Atmospheres Throughout an Event

A Christmas event is a journey, and the styling should evolve with it. Depending on the format, guests may move from arrival to drinks reception, dinner, networking, dancing and departure, and each stage calls for a slightly different mood.

For Christmas reception ideas to get guests mingling, focus styling around bars and gathering points, with warm lighting and seasonal greenery creating a relaxed, festive atmosphere. At dinner, tablescaping takes centre stage, with lower centrepieces and candlelight drawing guests together. As the evening moves on to networking or dancing, softer lighting and intimate corners give guests space to connect, before a final glimpse of the entrance installation sends them home on a high.

Lighting ties every stage together, and it's something Georgina feels strongly about. "For me, lighting is incredibly important at Christmas, and it has to be the right lighting. Warm-white fairy lights can bring everything to life and completely transform the atmosphere! Cold-white lights on a frantic flashing setting have entirely the opposite effect! I will never understand why fairy lights need quite so many different settings. Warm white and static mode for me, all the way. Why on earth would anyone choose the slow fade?"

With ten versatile event spaces across our two townhouses, {10-11} lends itself naturally to journey-based celebrations, allowing planners to host guests across rooms and create distinct moments as the evening unfolds.

The Details Guests Remember

Often, it's the smaller touches that stay with guests long after the evening ends. Christmas centrepieces, garlands winding up a staircase, a dressed fireplace or a beautifully styled bar all add layers to the event experience and create natural photography opportunities throughout the venue.

Scent is one of the most evocative and most overlooked details. "Christmas is full of sensory moments: scent, texture and lighting. Event styling really comes to life when all three are considered together," Georgina says. "The scent of mixed pine, cedar and herbs can transport us straight back to Christmas past, particularly when combined with seasonal ingredients such as dried oranges, lemons, star anise and cinnamon."

Candlelight is another detail that makes a lasting impression. "{10-11} Carlton House Terrace is also one of the few London venues that allows real candlelight, so anyone planning an event here should embrace it," Georgina explains. "Candlelight arranged at varying heights is very difficult to beat at this time of year."

Planning Your Christmas Event Styling Early

The best Christmas styling is rarely rushed. Ideally, styling conversations should begin as soon as your date is confirmed, and no later than early autumn, allowing time to develop a cohesive concept, source seasonal materials and coordinate logistics with the venue.

"I would encourage clients to think early about where their styling will have the greatest impact," advises Georgina. "Rather than spreading the budget too thinly, concentrate on a few key areas such as the entrance, tree, bar or dining tables."

Collaboration between florist, venue and planner is key, particularly in a historic building, where access times, installation schedules and the protection of period interiors all need careful consideration. Working with a venue's approved suppliers, who already know the building and its requirements, helps installations run smoothly and allows everyone to focus on the creative vision.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I start planning Christmas event styling?

Ideally, as soon as your date is confirmed, and no later than early autumn. This gives your florist time to develop a concept, source seasonal and dried materials, and coordinate installation logistics with the venue. Prime December dates book quickly, so early planning also helps secure both your venue and your preferred suppliers.

What flowers are best for Christmas events?

Seasonal foliage such as pine, cedar and fir works beautifully, alongside dried flowers and seed heads like alliums, teasels, hydrangeas and rosehips. Dried fruits and spices, including oranges, star anise and cinnamon, add colour, texture and a festive scent.

How do florists work with historic venues?

Experienced florists design around the architecture rather than over it, taking cues from a building's proportions, colour and period features. In listed buildings, installations are typically free-standing to protect historic interiors, so working with a venue's approved florists, who already know its spaces and requirements, helps everything run smoothly.

Is Christmas styling included when I book a party at {10-11}?

Every Christmas package includes our festive styling by Rust Bloom across the arrival spaces, with a 12ft Christmas tree in the main reception and seasonal décor at the entrance and on the grand marble staircase. Your booked rooms also include simple festive table décor and candlelit centrepieces, with a Christmas tree in at least one of them. For something more bespoke, our approved florists, including Rust Bloom, can create additional styling for your rooms.

How can floral styling enhance a corporate Christmas party?

Floral styling shapes the guest experience at every stage, from a statement entrance that creates anticipation to centrepieces that encourage conversation at dinner. It also creates natural photo opportunities and adds sensory elements, such as scent and texture, that make an event feel considered and memorable.

Should Christmas styling match the venue architecture?

Styling that complements a venue's architecture almost always feels more elegant and cohesive. In a heritage setting like {10-11}, generous, balanced designs and natural materials enhance the existing grandeur, while a considered colour palette keeps the look festive without overwhelming the space.
